Research shows that people on prepayment meters paid on average an extra £215 a year compared to those paying by direct debit.
Richard said: "Energy companies charging more for people on prepayment meters (when they are paying upfront for their electricity and gas!) is outrageously unfair and, normally, at the expense of people on the lowest incomes. I am absolutely delighted the European Parliament vote will end this discriminatory practice. It is not only a fair decision it is one that will benefit thousands of people in Yorkshire & Humber, saving them hundreds of pounds every year."
Along with ending discriminatory pricing the new package of rules will also give customers the right to change their gas and electricity suppliers within three weeks and free of charge, give the right to compensation in cases where people are given inaccurate or delayed bills, and demands that 80% of consumers across Europe must have access to energy-efficient SmartMeters for electrical appliances.
Richard commented: "These new rules amount to a bill of rights for gas and electricity users. Labour MEPs have once again helped stand up for the rights of consumers against big business, leaving normal people better off while increasing energy efficiency."/
